Notice from the Genesee County Board of Commissioners:

April 8, 2019

Starting tomorrow morning (April 9th), Genesee County expects to have regular operations in both the Treasurer’s Office and Equalization Department. Both departments are in the process of verifying that the data being restored is accurate and dependable for our residents.

The return to regular operations for Treasurers and Equalization is in addition to the restoration of the county email system as well as the fax servers.

We continue to work on restoring regular operations in all other departments. Please call ahead prior to coming to our offices for service.

This attack was widespread and complex. This continues to be very fluid situation with constant changes. We will continue to give updates on this page as they become available.

April 6, 2019

The County continues to make progress towards restoring normal operations.

Around 5:30 PM yesterday, email services were restored to normal operation.

Due to the aggressiveness of the attack, there has been a setback in our initial expectations for the restoration to normal service across all departments. Our goal of having regular operations restored on Monday morning will not be met.

As we have said all along, this is a very fluid situation with constant changes. We are doing our best to give you the most up-to-date information as we get it.

Our office will continue to provide updates to this page as they become available.

April 5, 2019

We have made positive progress over the last 24 hours in our efforts to restore operations at Genesee County.

We are hopeful that we will be able to restore our email services sometime today. Should that be successful, our team and partners, will continue to work on restoring other systems over the next couple of days.

We are working towards the goal of having regular operations starting sometime on Monday.

This continues to be a very fluid situation and could change at any time. Our office will continue providing updates to this page as they become available.

April 2, 2019

Today, Genesee County’s computer networks were attacked by a ransomware-type virus. The attack held hostage our files and demanded payment for their release.

Genesee County has paid no fee for the release of information and no information has been compromised.

Our IT Department has been able to isolate the attack and stop the further encryption of critical information. They continue to work on restoring our systems to normal capacity. While our networks were down today, we expect that some of our systems will be restored to normal use by start of business Wednesday, April 3rd, and all of the remaining systems by the end of the business day.

Genesee County has been in consultation with both the Michigan State Police and the FBI concerning this matter.

All employees should report to work as normally scheduled.
